Travel Tips
PASSPORT AND VISA : A current valid Passport with an Entry Visa is required for all visitors. A Tourit Visa allows a stay of 28 days and is extendible for an additional 14 days. A Business Visa allows a stay of 28 days and is extendible for up to 12 months. A "Visa on Arrival" is granted only with prior arrangement, so it is best to obtain your Visa ahead of time. The process is quick and easy. Call the Myanmar Embassy in your country.

Thai tourists: An "Overland Entry" is permitted for Thai tourists with a border pass, and for third party tourists with a Visa at the following Myanmar-Thai border crossings: Tachilke, Three Pagoda Pass, Myawaddy, and Kawthaung.

Chinese Tourists: The same applies to Chinese tourists as Thai tourists at Chinese-Myanmar crossings: Lweje, Nam Kham, Kyukoke, Kwanlong and Mong Lar.

CUSTOMS: What to declare: Foreign currency more that US $2000 Jewelry Electronic items Cameras. It is strictly forbidden to export the following:

  • Antiquities
  • Archaeologically valuable items
  • Buddha statues more than 6" in height

DUTY FREE: You are allowed:

  • Two bottles of liquor
  • Two cartons of cigarettes
  • 100 Cigars
  • 1.5 lbs. of tobacco
  • 1 pint bottle of perfune or cologne

CURRENCY: The monetary unit in Myanar is the Kyat (pronounced 'chat') Visitors are not allowed to bring in or take out Kyat. Foreign currency must be exhanged only at authorized money changers at the airport, hotels, and banks.International credit cards and travelers checks are not widely used, except at major hotels and restaurants.

FOREIGN EXCHANGE CERTIFICATE (FEC) : All travelers arriving into Myanmar (with the exception of package tours or those with Business Visas) are required to exchange US $200 for FEC's which have an exchange rate equal to the U.S. Dollar. SEPTEMBER 2003 UPDATE !!

You no longer need to exchange $200 for FEC's (Foreign Exchange Currency) Traveling to Myanmar gets easier and easier!

HEALTH ISSUES : No vaccination certificate is required to enter Myanmar, unless you are coming from an infected area. Normal "travel shots" are advised, contact your local health department, or visit one of these websites:

AIRPORT TAX : A departure tax of US $10 payable in US Currency or FEC's is required. No departure tax is required for domestic flights.

ELECTRICAL POWER : 230 Volts AC and also 50 HZ. You can use the 3-prong or the 2-prong European style plug. In a few hotels you can use the standard US 2-prong kplug.

DRESS CODE : Remember this is a Buddhist country and always dress modestly. Shorts and tank tops for men and women should be avoided. When entering religious sites and pagodas, it is required to remove shoes and socks. It is also customary to remove your shoes when entering someone's home, so bring along shoes that are easy to slip on adn off. You will notice that the Burmese generally wear thong-style sandals as they are very convenient.

HOW TO GET HERE : Yangon International Airport and Mandalay International Airport are the main gateways into Myanmar. There are regular flights to Yangon from Bangkok and Singapore. Also there are direct flights to Yangon from Doha, Calcutta, Chiang Mai, Dhaka, Kuala Lumpur, Kunming, and Taipei.

Also Cruise Ships call at Yangon Port with Visa on arrival being gratned with prior arrangement.
